Best Practices for Students with Challenging Behaviors

Learn how to better support your students with challenging behaviors in the classroom with some helpful tips.

  • Clearly post and define rules and expectations for student
    • Review them frequently
  • Provide consistent responses to positive and negative behaviors
    • Have a plan in place!
  • Provide verbal praise for positive and desired behaviors
    • Give less attention to minor challenging behaviors
  • Provide several opportunities to earn reinforcement throughout the day
    • Frequently ask the student what he/she wants to earn
    • Change up options for reinforcement frequently so that the student does not get bored
  • Create a behavior contract between you and the student
    • Student’s end of the deal: display 1-2 positive behaviors you’d like the student to do that you decide on together
    • Teacher’s end of the deal: provide reward at specified time if student upholds his/her end of the deal
  • If student is motivated by peers, find ways for student to appropriately interact with peers and have peers give reinforcement
  • To avoid power struggles, give choices with 2 clear options where you are ok with either outcome
  • Offer options for breaks throughout the day
  • Think about the replacement behavior that you want the student to learn and do instead of the challenging behavior
    • This replacement behavior should have the same outcome for the student
