Learn how to better support your students with challenging behaviors in the classroom with some helpful tips.
- Clearly post and define rules and expectations for student
- Review them frequently
- Provide consistent responses to positive and negative behaviors
- Have a plan in place!
- Provide verbal praise for positive and desired behaviors
- Give less attention to minor challenging behaviors
- Provide several opportunities to earn reinforcement throughout the day
- Frequently ask the student what he/she wants to earn
- Change up options for reinforcement frequently so that the student does not get bored
- Create a behavior contract between you and the student
- Student’s end of the deal: display 1-2 positive behaviors you’d like the student to do that you decide on together
- Teacher’s end of the deal: provide reward at specified time if student upholds his/her end of the deal
- If student is motivated by peers, find ways for student to appropriately interact with peers and have peers give reinforcement
- To avoid power struggles, give choices with 2 clear options where you are ok with either outcome
- Offer options for breaks throughout the day
- Think about the replacement behavior that you want the student to learn and do instead of the challenging behavior
- This replacement behavior should have the same outcome for the student
